Virtual Diplomatic Mission Provides Insight into Gaza Displacement Crisis

Diplomats go virtual to witness Gaza - The United Nations announced on Thursday that representatives from twelve nations participated in a "virtual diplomatic field visit" to a displacement site within the Gaza Strip. During the event, diplomats listened to accounts from local residents detailing their most urgent requirements, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by those displaced by the ongoing conflict.

UN Officials Lead Remote Observation of Al Mawasi Conditions

The visit was led by Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), and his deputy, Suzanna Tkalec. The online session focused on the situation in Al Mawasi, a region in Khan Younis, where the displaced community is struggling to maintain basic living standards.

"Similar to journalists, diplomatic missions have faced significant hurdles in entering Gaza since October 2023," said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a routine update from New York.

Through a videolink, participants gained a firsthand view of the living conditions and aid initiatives at the site. They engaged with children, adults, and relief workers, creating an interactive platform to understand the human impact of the displacement.

At a key water distribution point, diplomats observed how community members, including families with young children, collected supplies delivered by trucks. The operation was managed by a local partner and supported by the UN’s OPT Humanitarian Fund.

"Displaced individuals emphasized their need for reliable water access, especially during the summer months, and requested cash-for-work programs to support their households," Dujarric explained.

The virtual tour also included a visit to hundreds of tents densely arranged along the coastline, highlighting the cramped living conditions and the resilience of the affected population.

Call for Enhanced Support and Political Action

Alakbarov expressed gratitude for the financial contributions from diplomats, stating that further investment and political measures are essential to maintain and expand humanitarian operations. He noted that persistent obstacles, such as supply blockages, require urgent attention to ensure sustained aid delivery.

UNRWA Continues Critical Services Amid Deteriorating Conditions

According to an update shared on Wednesday, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) remains active across the Gaza Strip, providing essential assistance to displaced families. Recent assessments by the Water and Sanitation Cluster revealed worsening water access, with 84% of households experiencing moderate to severe shortages.

From June 16 to June 30, UNRWA delivered approximately 79 million liters of water daily, benefiting over 860,000 people. During the same period, health workers assessed nearly 5,000 children aged six to 59 months, identifying 203 cases of malnutrition.

WHO Assists Infants with Unique Medical Needs

In parallel, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted its efforts to support 45 infants in Gaza born with cleft lip or palate. These infants rely on specialized feeding bottles due to their inability to breastfeed normally, a challenge exacerbated by the scarcity of medical supplies in the region.
