Qinilo.com – The United Nations human rights office has issued a stark warning regarding escalating tensions in the occupied West Bank, noting that violence has surged to unprecedented levels. According to the OHCHR, published on Wednesday, the Israeli Government’s ongoing approval of new settlements coincides with increased coordination between settlers and security forces in their attacks on Palestinian communities.
Death Toll and Attack Statistics
Data compiled through July 24 reveals that 76 Palestinians and a single Israeli national have lost their lives this year due to settler-related incidents. More recently, since Friday, the death toll has risen further with eight Palestinians—including one child—alongside two Israeli military personnel killed in the region.
The frequency of settler violence has climbed steadily since 2023, following the Hamas assaults on southern Israeli communities. The UN’s humanitarian coordination office (OCHA) recorded 1,835 incidents last year alone. Current trends indicate approximately 190 attacks occurring each month during the opening four months of 2026, suggesting the West Bank could surpass 2,000 total attacks before the year concludes.
Government Actions and Settlement Expansion
Settlers, bolstered by financial incentives provided by the Israeli state, regularly target Palestinian families, set fire to mosques, and seize or destroy property. These actions occur alongside those of security forces, creating a compounded threat to local populations.
Additionally, movement restrictions imposed on Palestinians have become more stringent than at any previous point, limiting access to vital services and daily necessities.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich recently confirmed the authorization of multiple new settlements, a move described by UN officials as contrary to international legal standards. This announcement came during a Security Council briefing in New York on Tuesday.
International Response and Diplomatic Efforts
UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov, addressing the situation from Jerusalem on Friday, expressed deep concern over the ongoing casualties. He emphasized that diplomatic pathways remain essential.
“There is no military or violent solution to this conflict,” Mr. Alakbarov stated.
The peace coordinator also urged Israel to ensure accountability for those responsible for violence while calling on all stakeholders to advance toward a two-state resolution. This aligns with the New York Declaration, which the General Assembly supported in September, despite opposition from both Israel and the United States.
The current crisis unfolds two years after the International Court of Justice delivered an advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank—dating back to 1967—as unlawful. The court further recommended that nations refrain from recognizing Israeli actions connected to the occupation. Israel promptly rejected the ruling.
UN Calls for Immediate Action
On Monday, Israeli forces conducted a forcible entry into a United Nations facility in East Jerusalem. Hundreds of Palestinian refugees utilize this center annually for complimentary vocational education. Both the UN and its regional partners condemned the intrusion as a breach of international law.
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani reiterated the organization’s position on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to conclude the occupation.
“We are alarmed by the Israeli Government’s announcement to further increase the number of settlements and outposts and open calls by Israeli leaders for revenge and collective punishment against Palestinian communities, accompanied by threats to turn the West Bank into another Gaza,” Shamdasani explained.
“With attacks by Israeli settlers, and the creation of settlements and outposts hitting an all-time high, third States must act urgently and in unison to halt the continuing killing and dispossession of the Palestinian people,” she added.
Mr. Alakbarov concluded his remarks by appealing to all involved parties to implement swift measures aimed at reversing the worsening situation in the West Bank.
“I call upon all parties to take urgent steps to reverse the dangerous trajectory in the West Bank,” he said.
