World Refugee Day: UN Urges Enhanced Support and Solidarity
World Refugee Day – On the occasion of World Refugee Day, celebrated annually on 20 June, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has emphasized the need for greater international support for the over 42 million displaced individuals worldwide. These people have left their homelands to escape war, violence, or persecution, and the UN is calling for renewed dedication to their plight.
A Commitment to Humanitarian Action
Barham Salih, the High Commissioner, underscored the vital roles refugees play in their host communities, from laborers and students to innovators and leaders. “Given the chance, they rebuild their lives and strengthen the societies around them,” he remarked, highlighting their resilience and contributions.
“With growing divisions across our world, new and ongoing conflicts are forcing millions of women, children, and men to seek safety far from home,” stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres. His message aligned with the global effort to support both displaced individuals and the communities that welcome them.
Salih, who once fled Iraq due to political repression, added, “Being a refugee is meant to be a temporary condition, not a lifelong fate.” He warned that many refugees remain in prolonged displacement, reliant on dwindling aid for basic needs. While emergency assistance is crucial, the challenge lies in ensuring long-term solutions.
“Fleeing home to seek safety is one of the hardest choices anyone can make. I know this from personal experience,” Salih reflected.
The High Commissioner urged that becoming a refugee should not define a person’s life. He emphasized the importance of reducing the number of refugees in extended displacement by half within a decade, as outlined in UNHCR’s recent Global Trends Report. This initiative targets low- and middle-income nations hosting the majority of displaced populations.
This year’s observance also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, a landmark agreement established post-World War II to protect individuals fleeing persecution. Salih reiterated the enduring significance of this treaty, stating, “We must continue to uphold that promise. Until everyone is safe, none of us are safe.”
“This is not just a statement of solidarity but a call to action,” he added. “The right to seek safety was created for moments like these, and it’s our collective responsibility to defend it.”
UNHCR’s campaign, themed “Until Everyone is Safe,” invites youth to advocate for refugees and champion asylum rights. The initiative seeks to dismantle misconceptions about displaced persons, showcasing their potential to contribute beyond survival. It also supports the broader objective of reducing long-term displacement by 50% by 2035, focusing on expanding access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities to foster independence.
