New cholera outbreak alert for Sudan’s war-weary communities
New Cholera Outbreak Alert for Sudan’s War-Torn Populations
New cholera outbreak alert for Sudan – The emergence of a new cholera outbreak alert for Sudan has intensified concerns over the health crisis gripping the nation. With over 100 fatalities reported, the disease is spreading rapidly through regions already destabilized by years of conflict. El-Obeid, a city in North Kordofan, has become a focal point of the outbreak, where relentless drone strikes have hindered aid efforts, leaving communities isolated and vulnerable. This situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated international support to address both the immediate health threats and the broader humanitarian challenges that have plagued Sudan for over two years.
WHO Director’s Statement on Outbreak Scope
Dr. Shible Sahbani, the World Health Organization’s representative in Sudan, recently warned that the cholera outbreak has reached alarming proportions. In a Geneva briefing, he outlined the scale of the crisis, stating that more than 1,330 cases have been confirmed, with 114 deaths attributed to the disease. Dr. Sahbani emphasized that cholera is both preventable and treatable, yet its fatality rate has climbed to 13.7% due to delays in medical intervention. His remarks highlight the critical juncture Sudan has reached, where the war’s devastation converges with a growing health emergency.
“Cholera is back and it’s affecting several states, mainly in the western part of the country, the Darfurs and the Kordofans,” Dr. Sahbani stated.
