Sudan: UN Security Council Alerts to Mass Atrocity Threat in El Obeid

Sudan – The United Nations Security Council has raised concerns about the recent deployment of significant military forces by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) surrounding El Obeid, signaling a potential threat of a large-scale attack on the city.

Immediate Call for Ceasefire

On Saturday, council members emphasized the urgency of preventing mass casualties, urging the RSF to suspend its operations in the city, which serves as the administrative hub of North Kordofan state.

Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis

Since April 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF have been engaged in intense hostilities. The council highlighted the deteriorating conditions in Kordofan states, where heightened clashes could exacerbate the already severe humanitarian emergency.

Members of the council have urged both factions to stop hostilities immediately, stressing the importance of safeguarding civilian lives and adhering to international legal frameworks, including humanitarian law.

Commitments Under the Jeddah Declaration

The council reiterated the need for compliance with the Jeddah Declaration, a peace accord signed in May 2023 by leaders of the warring parties in Saudi Arabia. This agreement mandates efforts to ensure the secure delivery of aid and the protection of non-combatants.

Drone Strikes and Conflict Expansion

Reports of RSF drone attacks in El Obeid have drawn further attention, alongside a rise in aerial assaults across Sudan. The council called for thorough examination of these incidents and justice for those affected.

They also reminded all parties of their responsibility to permit unhindered access for humanitarian workers and ensure safe travel for civilians, as stipulated by international law.

Global Responsibility and Peace Efforts

Members urged UN nations to avoid actions that might worsen the conflict, supporting initiatives for lasting peace and implementing resolutions such as 2791 (2025).

The council reaffirmed its dedication to preserving Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, while opposing any independent governing structures in regions under RSF control.
