Modern satellite technology has fundamentally transformed how we track greenhouse gas emissions, enabling near-instantaneous detection of substantial leaks from orbit. Despite this remarkable breakthrough, a troubling pattern persists: merely thirteen percent of these satellite alerts prompt any meaningful action from the relevant governments or corporations responsible for the emissions.

The United Nations Environment Programme is determined to bridge this critical divide between detection and response. Through a recently unveiled initiative supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, UNEP aims to assist nations in identifying and resolving eighty percent of major methane leaks identified by the year 2030. At present, just ten nations have achieved this ambitious target, highlighting both the progress made and the work still ahead.

Why Methane Matters Now

Methane contributes approximately one-third to contemporary global warming, making it a crucial target for climate mitigation efforts. Its atmospheric lifespan is considerably shorter than carbon dioxide, which means immediate emission reductions yield climate benefits within years instead of decades. This characteristic makes methane reduction one of the most effective short-term strategies for slowing temperature rise.

“Carbon dioxide remains the principal driver of long-term warming. But it is also time to prioritize the cutting of methane,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “Aggressive cuts could produce visible temperature relief within a generation.”

Human activities generate over sixty percent of methane emissions globally, with agriculture, fossil fuel extraction, and waste management serving as primary sources. The fossil fuel industry presents particularly rapid and economical opportunities for emission reductions, making it a priority sector for intervention and policy development.

MARS: Tracking Leaks in Real Time

The Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) leverages satellite observations to pinpoint substantial methane leaks almost immediately after they occur. Once identified, the system notifies both governmental authorities and facility operators, enabling swift investigation and repair before emissions escape into the atmosphere.

Since its 2023 launch, MARS has generated over five thousand alerts spanning thirty-three nations, catalyzing more than forty confirmed repairs. One notable success occurred in Algeria, where a single alert revealed a decades-old leak. Fixing this issue delivers environmental benefits equivalent to removing half a million vehicles from roads annually, demonstrating the scale of impact possible through timely intervention.

“We can now see methane pollution as it happens, in near real time, from space,” said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen. “With this capability, inaction is not an oversight – it is a choice.”

Expanding the Response

The enhanced programme will bolster technical assistance for governments, enhance access to methane emissions information, and strengthen national capacity for rapid investigation and response. These improvements aim to create a more robust framework for addressing the detection-to-action gap that currently limits progress.

“Cutting methane emissions is one of the most important steps we can take to tackle climate change – and one of the most simple and cost-effective, too,” said Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies who also serves as UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions.

Bloomberg continued: “We have the data we need to stop methane leaks, and now we are helping countries turn that data into faster, bolder action.”

Greater commitment from both governments and operators remains crucial to closing the response gap. The efforts unveiled today seek to ensure nations can capitalize on this opportunity to decelerate the pace of climate change, transforming satellite capabilities into tangible environmental outcomes.
