The United Nations children’s organization reports that six nations currently host active outbreaks, with the situation worsening as seasonal patterns intensify.
Two Major Transmission Pathways
The disease is traveling along two primary corridors that connect multiple countries. In the Lake Chad Basin region, a single strain—Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa—is simultaneously impacting Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Congo River Basin corridor links outbreaks across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
Flooding along these routes has contaminated water supplies, damaged sanitation systems, and isolated vulnerable populations from essential services.
Regional Impact and Statistics
Nigeria currently experiences the most extensive outbreak in the region, recording over 50,000 cases and 338 fatalities since January 1. The crisis is largely concentrated in Borno state.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo faces the highest mortality rate, with nearly 700 deaths among more than 30,400 confirmed cases.
Children Bear the Brunt
Young people are disproportionately affected by the epidemic. In the Central African Republic, children under ten represent 44 percent of all reported cases. Chad shows similar patterns, with almost two-thirds of infections occurring in children younger than fifteen. Cameroon’s median patient age stands at just ten years old.
“This outbreak is no longer confined by borders,” said Gilles Fagninou, UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa on Tuesday. “It is moving along shared rivers, trade routes and population movements, putting millions of children at risk.”
Fagninou emphasized that each new infection highlights how millions of children remain without access to clean water. He stressed that halting the disease demands urgent action, adequate investment, and regional cooperation.
Response Efforts Underway
UNICEF is requesting an additional $15 million to expand its operations over the coming six months. The agency, alongside partners and local authorities, is scaling up safe water and sanitation access, enhancing disease monitoring, distributing critical health supplies, and supporting oral cholera vaccination initiatives.
Coordination extends to the World Health Organization and Africa CDC along the primary transmission corridors to ensure a comprehensive regional response to this preventable and treatable waterborne illness.
