Ukraine: Russian Attacks Devastate Humanitarian Supplies
Qinilo.com – Recent strikes by Russian forces and drone attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least two minors and injured numerous others across Ukraine, while causing severe damage to three essential aid storage facilities, as disclosed by UN agencies on Monday.
Impact on Kyiv and Other Regions
OCHA stated that attacks in the past several days targeted Kyiv, a recreational area in the Odesa region, and Zaporizhzhia. Media reports indicated that a drone strike in Zaporizhzhia destroyed a Red Cross vehicle.
“The escalating frequency of these assaults across Ukraine is deeply alarming,” remarked Matthias Schmale, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for the region.
Following the weekend’s attacks, humanitarian supply depots faced significant damage, including facilities operated by the World Food Programme (WFP) in Dnipro and the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Kyiv area, according to a UN spokesperson.
The WFP warehouse was struck four times by drones, as per the agency’s report, representing the seventh assault on its marked facilities in Ukraine over the past three months. Over the last two years, more than 90 drone attacks have targeted such sites.
Damage to Bilohorodka Warehouse
On Sunday, a UNICEF-organized warehouse in Bilohorodka was hit, housing over 106,000 items valued at $3.9 million. These included generators, water reserves, hygiene packages, and storage units vital for the agency’s operations, with ongoing assessments of the total damage.
“This incident marked another harrowing night for children,” UNICEF noted. “Air raid alerts and explosions persisted for hours in Kyiv and surrounding areas, with reports of home destruction and casualties.”
UNICEF emphasized its sorrow over the deaths of two children and the injury of at least 50 others in recent attacks, including those in Kyiv. June saw the highest child casualty count since 2022, with seven fatalities and 116 injuries recorded.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” the agency’s statement declared.
UNICEF warned that ongoing assaults are hindering humanitarian efforts, citing damage to warehouses and attacks on aid workers as major obstacles to delivering essential support to children and families affected by the conflict.
“These attacks must cease,” UNICEF asserted. “Children and humanitarian sites deserve protection. Ultimately, Ukraine’s children require a sustainable peace.”
Despite these challenges, UN representatives highlighted that emergency aid was swiftly deployed after the attacks, with 11 metric tonnes of supplies reaching communities in Kherson. The packages included water, hygiene kits, dignity items, first-aid supplies, and medical essentials.
