Ukraine: UN Condemns Overnight Assault on Kyiv
Qinilo.com – The United Nations has condemned a new Russian attack on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, which resulted in one fatality and at least twelve injuries. The assault, described as extensive, caused damage to residential buildings, commercial establishments, and a metro station.
Impact on Civilian Infrastructure
Matthias Schmale, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, highlighted the attack’s effects in a statement shared on X. He emphasized that the strikes continue to harm civilians, even in urban areas distant from the frontlines.
“The mounting civilian casualties from these attacks across the nation are deeply concerning, especially in regions far from the frontline,” Schmale noted.
Recent Strikes in Odesa
The Kyiv assault occurred a day after a violent strike in the Odesa region, where an amusement park was hit and several individuals, including children, were killed or injured.
Humanitarian Response
Following the attack, UN humanitarian workers deployed resources to assist displaced residents. These efforts included providing food, shelter supplies, and psychological and legal aid to those affected.
“The damage to homes and disruption of livelihoods underscore the urgent need for sustained support to communities impacted by the conflict,” stated the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Women’s Resilience and Burden
UN Women shared a photograph of survivors in the Lukianivska district, one of the most affected zones. The image captured women who had resumed work at an outdoor market shortly after the air raid.
“Their resilience reflects the ongoing challenges faced by women in this war, who remain disproportionately affected,” the agency remarked.
According to UN Women, civilian casualties among women and girls rose by 34% between January and May of this year compared to the same period in 2025.
Disruption of Health Services
A UN World Health Organization (WHO) facility in the Kyiv region sustained damage during the attack. Though no medical supplies were stored there and staff remained unharmed, the incident hindered the agency’s ability to support local health systems.
“Such attacks complicate our efforts to maintain critical healthcare services in the region,” the WHO noted in a tweet.
