UN deplores another wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine
UN Condemns Escalating Attacks in Ukraine
UN deplores another wave of Russian – The United Nations has criticized recent Russian strikes that have resulted in civilian fatalities, injuries, and significant damage to infrastructure across Ukraine. According to the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, multiple cities were targeted overnight, with homes, hospitals, and shops suffering destruction or harm.
Targeted Strikes and Human Toll
Matthias Schmale, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, expressed outrage over the renewed Russian assault on Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv. This marks the third attack on these locations in recent weeks, displacing families and disrupting the start of summer break for children.
“Children and their families endured the night in underground shelters, waking to air raid alarms, explosions, and the constant threat of harm,” Schmale stated.
Global Response and Ceasefire Calls
UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a strong condemnation of the attacks, as conveyed by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, during a press briefing in New York. The Secretary-General emphasized the urgent need for a full and unconditional ceasefire to reduce the ongoing conflict’s impact.
Regional Impact and Weapon Use
Explosions were also documented in other regions such as Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Poltava, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. The mission highlighted that the Ukraine Air Force reported 656 long-range drones and missiles being deployed during the assault. Despite interception efforts, 30 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and 33 drones hit 38 sites.
Russian Justification and Escalation
Russian officials claimed the bombardment was a reaction to a Ukrainian strike in Starobilsk, Luhansk region, which reportedly caused 21 civilian deaths. Moscow had previously warned of sustained attacks on Kyiv targets, aligning with the current assault’s intensity.
Children’s Fund Highlights Tragic Losses
UNICEF mourned the death of a three-year-old boy in Dnipro and the injuries of 10 children during the attacks. The agency called for an end to the senseless destruction of young lives, sharing Valeriia’s account of surviving a night in a basement with her mother.
“I thought I wasn’t going to survive. The explosions were so strong they blew open the shelter door, and I broke down in tears,” Valeriia recounted.
Psychological and Physical Consequences
Schmale underscored the psychological strain on civilians, noting that fear and anxiety persist as attacks continue without pause. He urged adherence to international law to shield civilian populations and infrastructure, including homes and hospitals, from further harm.
“The war’s relentless nature has taken a severe mental and physical toll, with no respite for those caught in the crossfire,” he added.
Emergency Workers at Risk
Amid ongoing rescue operations in Kyiv and Dnipro, the HRMMU reported that an emergency worker was among the casualties. This highlights the dangers faced by personnel aiding civilians in the aftermath of strikes.
Year-Over-Year Casualty Trends
The UN monitoring mission noted that the use of long-range missiles and drones has sharply increased, contributing to a 20% rise in civilian casualties compared to the same period in 2025. This trend reflects the broader devastation of populated areas through explosive weapons.
