Humanity’s future depends on protecting the rapidly changing ocean

Humanity s future depends on protecting – The ocean, covering over 70 per cent of Earth, plays a critical role in climate regulation, biodiversity maintenance, and sustaining economies and cultures globally. It is the bedrock of life on our planet.

The World Ocean Assessment

Five years of collaborative effort by 550 experts from 86 countries has culminated in a comprehensive 1600-page report detailing the ocean’s challenges. This scientific guide offers essential insights to preserve and sustain the planet’s health.

Even those not living near the coast are shaped by the ocean’s presence. By absorbing most of the planet’s excess heat and harmful greenhouse gases, it acts as a climate stabilizer. Without this cooling effect, extreme weather events could become more frequent, threatening food systems, supply chains, and insurance markets.

Food, Health, and Economic Impact

The ocean is a key provider of sustenance, offering 20 per cent of the animal protein consumed worldwide. When fish populations dwindle or supply chains falter due to climate shifts or illegal fishing, food prices rise, affecting not just seafood but other globally traded commodities.

It also enhances mental and physical well-being, serves as a source of medicines, and contributes significantly to the oxygen we breathe. Beyond that, the ocean supports trillions of dollars in trade, tourism, and employment, making it a cornerstone of global economies.

Marine ecosystems are under transformation. With the world’s population hitting 8.2 billion in 2024,
